A Snip from my book: What Takes Courage
I was eight when the war started. Specifically, third period, halfway through my science class. The sirens that rang across the town put a pit feeling in your gut, classmates on edge as the teacher quickly took action ushering us out the door, this time it was not a drill. The hall fills with students, some crying others silent. We weren’t a rich town but in 2024 after the attack on the Capitol by Russia, our county decided to build a bunker near schools. A lot of funding went into building it, we thought we would never have to use it, it would just sit for years. We were grateful that day, only we could never believe that it was our own government attacking that would make us use it. We haven’t appointed a new president in thirteen years, a shift in America’s view of the government quickly became hostile, rightfully. The media kept what happened at the Capitol quiet, the real story is the retaliation of the people. This led to the government taking merciless action by bombing major cities and killing those who fought against them. It took less than a week for the government to gain control again. Our population dwindled dramatically a lot of those who survived turned to work with the government as military to stay alive. The states are locked down, you can’t leave the state without proper identification or of higher status. I was raised most of my life in Washington State, and I don’t see myself leaving anytime soon. A new way of identification came into play months after the Civil War.
What Takes Courage book cover 1
With this one I wanted to capture the chaos that the story holds. I made this with photoshop.
This book is about the United States if there were another civil war but the government won against the people. The perspective is from a 17 year old girl named Charlie who has a secret in her family that might get her killed or captured.
What Takes Courage book cover 2
I created this one to focus more on the face of the main character. I used warm and cool colors to blend together nicely.
Jett’s Journal book
August 4, 2048
I was always told to “live life to the fullest”, go to school dances, party, graduate, and maybe even get a degree from college. I was never the type to do many active things, I’d rather stay in my room alone, as that was where I felt the happiest. If I’d known the world was going to end I wouldn’t have taken it for granted. I would have gone to all the high school parties, dances, or whatever, maybe even find the girl of my dreams. But as I sit here alone on the edge of an abandoned town, I can only imagine all the life that once walked the earth. The town I grew up in is now empty, left for nature to take back. I almost find it more peaceful than before.
